Look at how the Loquats are turning yellow.They still aren’t ripe.Their beautiful color can be deceiving– tempting you to pick them (they are still tart) before they’ve turned sugar sweet.This weekend my DH built the “keep the birds the heck out of here” loquat enclosure.It took lots of bird netting which is so difficult to work with.Now that it’s up we can patiently wait for the fruit to ripen naturally.It shouldn’t be too long,the temps are in the 90′s.There’s a video of the Loquat Enclosure–wouldn’t you know the neighbors would have the chain saw going.The three varieties of loquats are McBeth,Advanced and Gold Nugget.Please view the pictures with the PicLens for better quality and to see all the photos.
Nice loquat pics and video. Mine have come and gone till next winter. They are usually a February crop where I live. I fed many a “nasty bird” this year and I commend the extrodinary efforts your husband has put forward to protect your crop. I feel unworthy in my lack of zeal toward that end……not! I have never seen those varieties before here in Florida which seems to be the case in a lot of tropical fruits. Our climates are so different and certain varieties do better in each climate zone. The premier loquat variety (my opinion) for our humid climate is Yehuda, a Syrian selection. It is very prolific and finds the dryer weather in the winter very suitable and does not mind the occasional cold snap at all. I have never seen the leaves of this tree burned at all by cold temperatures here. Also, have never seen any fruit fly larvae in fruits from this variety. I think this is one of the most perfect winter fruit trees for South Florida. Have fun eating those loquats!
